Former Pulaski County Sheriff Mike Gayer’s attorney will have access to grand jury testimony as he prepares his client’s defense. He and former Chief Deputy Ronnie Patrick are accused of stealing weapons and ammunition from the sheriff’s department.
Current Sheriff Jeff Richwine contacted the Indiana State Police after discovering inconsistencies in the county’s inventory when he took over the position. Gayer retired in December of 2014 after serving two terms as sheriff. Patrick left the sheriff’s department in July of 2014 to take a job as a civilian contractor for the State Department. The ISP investigation launched in 2015.
A total of 14 witnesses testified before a Pulaski County Grand Jury in August. During a Wednesday court appearance, Pulaski Circuit Judge Michael Shurn approved a motion filed by Gayer’s attorney to provide testimony transcripts of witnesses the state plans to call to the defense counsel.
The testimony will only be shared between attorneys and will not be a part of the public court file.
Gayer is charged with the following offenses:
Count I – Theft – Level 6 Felony
Count II – Theft – Class D Felony and Level 6 Felony
